It depends on your policy. Medicare covers skilled care after and during an acute illness, if you meet criteria. Skilled care can include nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and medical social worker. Home care aide services can be covered it there is a skilled service needed. Dietician services, though not a covered service for most insurance, are available through some agencies, and are available at Visiting Nurse Association Health Services. Some policies require a co-pay. Visiting Nurse Association can help you investigate your policy's particular coverage.

Medicare requires that you meet four criteria: They are as follows:
- You are homebound
- You have a physician that will order care
- Your care is intermittent or part-time and skilled, and
- Your care is reasonable and necessary

There are usually no out-of-pocket expenses under Medicare for home care services. Other insurance policies may vary. Visiting Nurse Association can assist you in determining your policy coverage. You will be notified at the start of care if there are any out-of-pocket expenses.
Medicare and most insurance companies cover personal care if there is a skilled need during an acute illness. Home care aide services are usually short term, when they are covered. Housekeeping services are not covered under the home care benefit. Special long-term insurance policies purchased by an individual may cover these services. Benefits vary with policy. Visiting Nurse Association can provide these services through our chronic care division, Special Care Services. Community funding through United Way and Commission on Aging may be available for a limited amount of service.
Home Care is meant to be a temporary means of support. We can provide you with short term services of Nurses, Home Health Aides, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Nutrition Therapy and Social Work Services, dependent on your needs. These services are designed to help you return to your previous level of functioning or, when this does not appear likely, to help you look and plan for your long term needs.

In most cases, yes. Medicare covers home therapy services that are deemed skilled, reasonable and necessary as long as the patient is homebound and physician orders are obtained.
You must be at least 65 years of age and a U.S. citizen. Patients with kidney failure or patients suffering a disabling injury may also be eligible for Medicare coverage.
We have a dietician, licensed social worker and wound & ostomy care specialist on staff to further assist you.
On the average, services are typically provided within 24 to 48 hours of receiving a referral. Hospitals, nursing homes, social workers and physicians typically provide the initial referral contact, although we welcome family members contacting us with requests for service.
